Regional Centre

The Rugby League Academy was established in 2011 and provides a route into the sport of rugby league for talented players in the South West.

The primary objectives of the Rugby League Academy is to help students with their personal development and sporting ambitions along with achieving their chosen academic qualifications from the many courses on offer at SGS College.

We have found that by maintaining a balanced approach to the academic demands alongside those of the Rugby League Academy, students’ progress into professional sport, higher education or working life with the best opportunities for success.

We have great facilities at SGS Wise Campus and our players get supervised sessions from our strength and conditioning coaches at our state-of-the-art gym and receive the best nutrition, performance analysis and injury prevention advice from our performance laboratory team.

Under the tutelage of Head Coach Thomas James, the Academy focuses on personal player improvement so that each player becomes the best player they can be in one of the most exciting team sports in the world.

Pathway to Professional Sport

The Rugby League Academy offers a pathway to professional rugby league, semi-professional rugby league and academic pathways to universities.

This year the Rugby League academy had a squad of 25 between first and second years and we select new members for our academy during trial days.

We compete in the AOC Colleges competitions which is the highest level for academic universities and colleges and we also regularly play against the academies of Super League clubs.

As part of our Rugby League Academy, talented players are encouraged to take up representative opportunities with South of England Colleges, who take part in the annual regional championships. These opportunities lead to representing England at England Colleges and England Students levels.

In 2016, two of our students Mitch Dent and Jack Uren made the England Colleges squad and have since been rewarded with full scholarships at the University of Gloucester. This brings the number of players from SGS who have gained full academic university scholarships since 2011 to eight.
