Strong Team Culture

The Women’s Rugby Academy has grown exponentially since it was formed in August 2013.

There are presently 29 student athletes who play rugby throughout the academic calendar in Sevens, 10-a-side and 15-a-side formats of the game.

The Women’s Rugby Academy have brought immediate success to SGS College winning the Llandovery Sevens Tournament in 2014 and 2015, the Berkhamsted Sevens A and B tournaments in 2015 and 2014 respectively, and the Reigate Sevens Tournament in 2016.

Through high-level coaching, we help the academy girls to better understand the game and we use video analysis and field sessions to improve their tactical and technical performance. We also have the professional support to help in relation to mental preparation, physical conditioning and nutritional advice in addition to injury avoidance and rehabilitation.

We are very proud of our track record of improving the student athletes that come to the Women’s Rugby Academy at SGS.

The Women’s Rugby Academy has fostered close ties with Bristol Rugby and Head of Academy Matt Belbin is a former coach at Bristol Ladies. Every year the coaches pay particular attention to creating a good culture within the team around the values of honesty, teamwork, humility and mutual respect.

The team travels on an annual rugby tour abroad to give the girls a new cultural experience within rugby. In 2016, the Women’s Academy team competed at the Sanix World Youth Rugby tournament in Fukuoka, Japan, where they won a Respect Award, while in 2017 they partook on a rugby tour in Dubai.

International Recognition

Women’s rugby is a sport that has garnered a larger profile since England won the World Cup in 2014 and we have a number of students who have progressed to claim provincial and international honours.

Chantelle Miell and Ellie Mulhearn have both played for the England Under-18’s and Under-20’s sides. Chantelle also played for the senior England Sevens team at the HSBC Women’s Sevens Series held in Sydney, Australia in early 2017.

SGS graduate Vicky Foxwell was capped by the England Under-18 Sevens team in 2016.
