The Women’s Football Academy was one of the first academies to offer full-time football training combined with academic qualifications for girls in the UK and has long been an established presence at SGS College.

Students between the ages of 16-19 are given the opportunity to combine academic study from the many courses available at SGS College with up to 20 hours of top-level coaching each week from Head of Academy Lauren Smith; former Welsh international player Loren Dykes who has accumulated over 80 senior international caps and more than 100 games for Bristol City WFC; goalkeeping coach Neil Moore and Bristol WFC development squad assistant coach James Thomas.

The Women’s Football Academy is comprised of two playing squads with an elite team made up of players preparing to make the next step as high performance footballers hoping to earn a professional contract from Bristol City WFC.

Our first team competes annually in three competitions, the Category One League that is organised by the English Colleges and the AOC, the English Colleges Premier Cup and the English Schools FA Cup.

These competitions afford our girls plenty of opportunities to play and we have an excellent record. In 2017, our academy won the English College’s FA Cup and were runners-up in the English School’s FA Cup. Last year in 2016, we got to the ECFA National Play-off Final.

Our second squad plays in the English Colleges Category Three South West Championships and players who develop well and make sufficient progress then get opportunities to play for the first team.

We have high expectation in terms of attitude and we place a high emphasis on work rate, professionalism, belief and bravery.

At SGS College our academy girls train at top-level facilities. These include a 60m x 40m 3G indoor football pitch, two full size 80m x 60m floodlit 3G Football pitches and 12 3G artificial five-a-side football pitches. They also get to play at the home of Bristol City WFC pitch at Wise Campus.

The Women’s Football Academy also get supervised gym sessions from our strength and conditioning coaches at our state-of-the-art gym and receive the best nutrition, performance analysis and injury prevention advice from our team of on-site physios.

Long-standing link with Bristol WFC

Our Women’s Football Academy was historically one of the first female college football team to run alongside a professional club and that helped to attract players from all over the UK to play for the Vixens.

Over the years, our Women’s Football Academy has built up a superb relationship with Bristol City WFC and our academy performs an essential role in developing talent on the Bristol City WFC player pathway.

Presently, bar three players, the full Bristol City Women’s development squad that play on Sundays against other WSL academy sides are all from our Women’s Football Academy at SGS.

Many of our former students have lined-out for the professional side and presently Jas Mathews, who has played for England at Under 17, Under-19 and Under 23 levels, is a regular in the side.

Georgia Evans is another former student, who is a Welsh senior international, who signed a professional contract with Bristol WFC upon completing her time at the Women’s Football Academy at SGS College.

Already in 2017 five of our current students, who all play on underage England teams have played top-level competitive football in the WSL1 Spring Series against Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal and will be part of the Bristol City WFC Squad when the Women’s Super League resumes in the autumn.

Many other students have left SGS College to take up football scholarships in the USA upon completion of their studies, while other have continued to train during the week at the Academy by taking up degree courses at SGS College.

Trials for the Women’s Football Academy are held during the school breaks during the academic calendar and throughout the summer.  For more information, please contact our Head Coach, Lauren Smith via email to
